Had three tours of duty in
the Mediterranean Sea with the Sixth Fleet: two tours aboard the USS CHUAKAWAN AO-100 and
one aboard the USS AUCILLA AO-56. Most interesting duty of my tour in the U. S. Navy was
aboard the Icebreaker USS Glacier AGB-4, making two trips to the Antarctic in 1956-1958
and visiting New Zealand and Australia. Made three round trips through the Panama Canal,
one in 1951 aboard the USS TACONIC AGC-17, picking up dependents of personnel of the
Submarine Base at Balboa after its closing, other two trips aboard the USS GLACIER AGB-4
in 1956, 1957 and 1958. |

After discharge from the U. S. Navy, I went to work for the U. S. Postal
Service as a Letter Carried in the city of Cookeville, Tennessee and retired in 1990 with
35 years of civil service time.I am married to Judy Gail
Benson. We have one daughter, Debra,
and make our home in Livingston, Tennessee. We spend a lot of our spare time raising our
Granddaughter, Alicia
Michelle Melton.
(Webmaster's note: Jim passed away in 1999). As for my
hobbies, I enjoy being President of the USS GLACIER AGB-4 ASSOCIATION. I have been
President and Reunion coordinator since 1993 and have coordinated three reunions and will
do the up coming reunion in St. Louis, MO., in 1999. I enjoy doing the reunions and
searching for former crew members of the Glacier. I am also doing genealogy research on my
family tree.
I have been blessed with good health up to 1996, when I was
diagnosed with Esophageal cancer. I took treatments and had surgery in the fall of 1996
and my health has been improving ever since. |
